Borough Road Flyover

13 September 2016

Bagnalls, NHSS19A accredited, were appointed by Balvac (Balfour Beatty) to undertake the blasting and painting to the underside steelwork of the Borough Road Flyover in Birkenhead, which spans just over half a mile long.

As the flyover bridges a main road into Birkenhead city centre, the majority of the works had to be undertaken during night time road closures to minimise disruption to the public and traffic, however some parts of the flyover bridged private car parks and compounds which could be completed during normal working hours.

Some areas required a full scaffold and full encapsulation; however most of the project was accessible via MEWP access. The project was subject to a full Highways Agency approved specification, so our painters prepared and coated the structure in line with an International Paints’ specification.

The Bagnalls’ operatives ensured that the site was kept safe and tidy at all times. To prevent environmental contaminations during grit blasting and when there was not a requirement for a full scaffold encapsulation, Bagnalls double sheeting the sides of the flyover from the parapet railings above the steelwork down to the ground.  At the end of each shift Bagnalls hired a road cleaner to fully clean down the nearby areas in which we had been working and ensure there was no grit left on the roads and pathways.
