Severn Trent are constantly upgrading their sites, across the region, to ensure that they are safe and accessible environments for their staff and contractors. Bagnalls delivers a wide range of minor civils work to the Severn Trent Water infrastructure, including refurbishing sewage wet wells, which need to be air tight and robust enough for vehicular and lifting equipment, when necessary, to access the pumps. New spring loaded Guardsman covers and fall arrest systems were incorporated into the design of the sewage wet well when it went through its refurbishment programme. Occasionally, the current structures are not suitable to house these new covers and need to be modified in an alternative way.
To offer a long-term maintenance solution we excavated the area fully then we fabricated extra supports into the un-supported areas/corners of the compliant covers. A brickwork casing was then installed for three reasons. Firstly, it would act as a suitable shutter to contain the concrete and would allow us to vibrate it to a suitable density. Secondly, it would be more aesthetically pleasing to local residents than flat concrete and lastly it would reduce the need to return at a later date to strip shutters, thus saving time and money over the longer term. We then encased these supports, and the new covers, in concrete to provide a solid and resilient structure.
