Investing in our people

By looking after our staff, we can better care for our customers.

Our people stay with us for a long time because we invest in their training, support their development, and ensure their safety at all times – meaning that customers can be assured of the best possible service.

We believe that our strength comes from the people we employ, train and develop. We have over 650 directly employed people made up of apprentices, skilled operatives, supervisors, project management staff and senior managers.

We produce personalised training plans for our people, developing each individual to meet the needs of our customers and also to achieve their own aspirations and capability.

Safety is paramount at Bagnalls, therefore all staff receive both external and internal training as standard.

Site-based operatives receive specific training according to their role, such as Asbestos Awareness or specialist task-based training such as IPAF training for MEWPs. Supervisors also complete the CITB Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS), and Contract Managers are trained to the Site Manager Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) standard.

We see the importance of developing our own talent, reflected in our award-winning approach to apprenticeships and Management Trainees. In 2022, we were named in the Top 100 Apprentice Employers.

We are a Living Wage employer and our staff pay and conditions are in line with the CIJC Working Rule Agreement. Furthermore, our vetted suppliers and specialist subcontractors must be able to demonstrate their compliance to these standards in order to trade with us.

Throughout their careers, all staff attend an annual safety training refresher day, enhanced through regular site-based toolbox talks on a wide range of subjects ranging from customer care to waste management. On the job training is provided by experienced operatives and supervisors to those less experienced.

We invest in the people for the long- term and have many long service employees at all levels in our business, testament to the high level of employee engagement and loyalty fostered by Bagnalls. Our staff turnover is low and many of our people have been with the company over 25 years, with an average length of service being 10 years. Lee Jeyes has enjoyed a varied career with Bagnalls.
