Protective Coatings to Southport Station Roof Steelwork

Bagnalls won this opportunity through competitive tender and our local branch in Ellesmere Port carried out the work as they have years of experience in handling complex projects and undertaking industrial coating works to steel structures.

Southport is situated on the North West coast of England so Bagnalls had to contend with the conditions of a seaside location and working over the winter months. In addition, the railway station remained fully open to the public during the entire course of the refurbishment works. Therefore, Kier had to install a fully decked scaffold platform to ensure public safety, whilst we undertook painting works above.

Bagnalls carried out a full risk assessment which incorporated the strict requirements for working in a Rail environment, the removal of lead based paints and working at height.

As a Link Up, Qualified via Audit registered company, we had all the personnel and safe systems of work required to work at the Station. Our team of industrial painters was made up of a trained foreman with over 20 years experience in this type of work and up to 10 directly employed painters with PTS (platform track safety) certificates and ICATS (Industrial coatings applicator scheme) training.

The roof structure was coated when all the existing roof sheeting was removed and specialist paints from Corroless were used. The personnel from Corroless gave excellent technical support throughout the contract, including several site visits.

Paul Sumner, Project Engineer for Kier, said “Excellent. The team were great and I knew that Jim Mather would ensure all works were completed to a high standard. We would have no hesitation in using Bagnalls again”.
