Bagnalls is Land Securities’ approved contractor and has a great deal of previous experience working at the White Rose shopping centre on a number of redecoration projects.
However, it is the most recent scope of works which has had the most dramatic transformation. Redecoration works included the repainting all high level mall walls in white and the impact feature walls in various bright, pantone colours; as well as replacing the acoustic pads in the central rotunda; carrying out repairs to the plaster work and repainting the suspended ceiling tiles, bridge and escalators.
The delivery of this contract required the use of various scissor lifts, articulated booms and a spider, all operated by directly employed painters, trained to the appropriate IPAF standard. Operational safety, site security and minimal disruption to the general public are all fundamental requirements when working for Land Securities. Therefore, works were undertaken outside normal store opening hours to maximise the safe system of work. In addition, a site foreman was dedicated to the contract for the duration of the works.
Working with our supply chain partner, Tikkurilla, a leading Finnish paint company, we produced several colour briefs to demonstrate how the White Rose Shopping Centre corporate colours could be incorporated in the schemes.
Achieving the paint finish required was actually one of the toughest hurdles to overcome. This was because the corporate colours chosen for the impact feature walls were in pantone colours, shades normally only used in the printing industry.
Tikkurilla’s specialist knowledge and production capabilities allowed the pantone colours to be achieved by starting with a clear base as opposed to conventional light and dark bases, used by most paint manufacturers. However, clear bases do not achieve good opacity, therefore, for some colours several coats were needed to achieve the depth of colour requested.
