Bagnalls commenced maintenance work to 21 of Wales & West Utilities gas governors – part of the control system of the gas network, in April 2016, in accordance with a strict ten-week programme. The painting works were overseen by an SCO (Safe Control of Operations) Scheme certified foreman and all operatives on site had been trained as part of the SHEA Utilities Gas Register.
We worked closely with Wales & West Utilities, the gas emergency and pipeline service for Wales and the South West of England, to make sure that every site was safe to work on and employed a Permit to Work system regulated by Wales & West Utilities. Air monitoring alarm systems were worn by all operatives on site and re-calibrated on a weekly basis throughout the works.
The programme needed to allow for the switching of gas feed streams to prevent coatings being affected by temperature changes and condensation caused by live pipework. Daily paint inspections were documented and audited by Wales & West Utilities and specialist advice was taken from the paint manufacturer’s technical division on how best to implement the paint system to meet Wales & West Utilities’ needs.
Sites were secure at all times with a system of padlocks, chains and clear signage was used to restrict access to the site.
Regular reports including photos were submitted to Wales & West Utilities to keep track of the project and any site-specific challenges which were found.
