Supporting our customers with innovative solutions is one of the reasons we have long standing and repeat business. Severn Trent Water needed to ensure the stability and integrity of one of their major attractions at the Visitor Centre at Carsington Water.
The Amphitheatre steps are in the very centre of the public access area and are heavily trafficked throughout the year. Due to their original design, they were susceptible to repeated damage and becoming unsafe even under normal use. They underwent numerous repairs which resulted in them having to be taken regularly out of use, to ensure visitors’ safety.
The only solution was to dismantle the steps and rebuild them to their original design. After our initial survey we pointed out that although we were quite happy to carry out the work as directed, we felt that the original design, although aesthetically pleasing, was flawed and asked if we could offer a better solution.
The aim was to keep the general appearance very similar but to eradicate any water ingress and increase the strength of the risers. We achieved this by removing the existing stone infill and replacing it with a coloured, imprinted concrete. After a few trial samples were cast, a colour and pattern were agreed and we set to work, mindful of the fact that we needed to get the work done before the summer influx of visitors.
Staff at the visitor centre have received great feedback and praise from the public following our work and can now have peace of mind that the steps will remain safe for use by visitors in the future.
