For the past 5 years, there is one individual who has supported hundreds of apprentices to improve and develop their painting and decorating skills, namely Barry Caple. His patience and persistence have to be commended as he works tirelessly to nurture first, second and third year apprentices to achieve their NVQ Level 2 and 3 in Painting and Decorating. Every week a different intake of apprentices turn up at the Academy door and each week they leave with a better grounding in the trade.
All of Bagnalls’ apprentices attend courses at their local college as well as having an on-site craft mentor from their branch. However, in 2004 Bagnalls decided to invest in a bespoke academy, to provide our apprentices with additional support to hone their skills. Barry has been the craft tutor in the academy since 2014, when he took over from another loyal employee who had achieved 50 years’ service with Bagnalls.
One apprentice recently commented “Barry has really helped me become a better painter. I am now in the third year of my apprenticeship and I really value the time I have spent at the academy in Doncaster. Not only are the facilities great but I can’t thank Barry enough for all the individual advice and support he has given me. He is tough but firm and only wants the best for us. I have nearly finished my apprenticeship now and know that Barry’s support has been priceless.”
Barry is very camera shy and normally leaves the limelight to the apprentices, but we have managed to capture a few photos over the years.
