Construction in the UK is an industry in which there is constant growth and lots of change. Nowadays, people working in construction include marketers, HR professionals, technology managers, health and safety executives and a wide range of other roles you might have never associated with a traditionally ‘hands-on’ sector.
For young people looking to enter the workforce, choosing construction as a field is a great way to enter a safe and secure sector that also provides exciting opportunities in virtually any job role you can imagine.
Whether you want to get hands-on with a traditional apprenticeship in something like painting and decorating, or you want to pursue skills in accountancy, project management, business administration or even cyber security, construction as a sector provides ample opportunity for young people.
At Bagnalls, we are a national painting contractor and a family business and we are proud to support young people entering the construction industry. We offer apprenticeships and training schemes for both and site- and office-based roles.
The construction sector contributed £113 billion to the UK economy in 2017 and accounted for 17% of all businesses and 7% of all jobs. In the third quarter of 2018 the sector output was up by 14% compared to 2007. This means that it’s a growing field that will support more new jobs.
The industry is also experiencing a skills gap – with not enough skilled new workers entering the sector. This provides a great opportunity for young people who often have to compete for in-demand roles. By training to enter the construction industry, you can fulfil skills shortages and establish a clear career path.
Whether you want to work as an account manager or project planner, or you want to learn practical hands-on trade skills such as painting and decorating, we can help. Traditionally you can start ‘on the tools’ and learn the trade itself, through our award-winning Apprenticeship scheme, before progressing into more senior roles, or apply for our management traineeship program.
Contact Our Construction Ambassadors
This year we have taken a keen interest in educating young people across the country. Naomi, from our HR team has trained as a ‘Construction Ambassador’ with CITB and promotes the benefits and opportunities in Construction to students still in education. We also work with schools to provide CV workshops and mock interview support.
We also know the importance of thinking about the key influencers in the decision-making process (normally parents and teachers) and that’s why we offer all under 18s, who apply for an apprenticeship with us, the opportunity to bring their parents along to an information session prior to interview.
Construction is an amazing, vast and rapidly growing industry – If you’re interested in entering a job that is rewarding and in-demand, get in touch with Bagnalls today and we can help with advice, guidance and potentially, training.
