Bagnalls were instructed by the Property Managers for Greenwich Hospital Trust to undertake the external redecorations and repairs to a row of listed Georgian, Regency and post-war rebuild properties lining King William Walk. The road is part of a World Heritage protected site, located directly opposite the Naval College Gardens and close to the Cutty Sark.

The fourteen week, external repairs project included a variety of elements; timber repairs of window frames, refurbishment of black railings, balcony metal work repairs, door-frame reinforcements and rebuilding of a porch canopy. Specialist subcontractors, managed by Bagnalls, undertook roof slate and asphalt repairs as well as installing windows.

The previously painted external walls were scraped back where peeling, the substrate repaired in places, then primed and fully recoated in a Dulux Weathershield Masonry Paint. Wooden surfaces were undercoated and glossed.

The first and second storeys were accessed via fixed scaffold. Pedestrian and traffic management was critical for the safe erection and dismantling phases of the scaffold as the works were adjacent to a busy main road. Clear directional signage and Monoflex sheeting was used throughout the project to ensure the safety of the general public who were passing by, in the vicinity of the works. Bagnalls were proud to receive a Silver Considerate Constructors Award based on the assessment made of our site management capabilities and delivery of the project.

Bagnalls also undertook the recoating of the crest at number 29, King William Walk, which marks the location of the offices of the Seafarer’s Hospital Society. This noble institution was first set up in 1821 to care for homeless and impoverished seafarers following the Napoleonic War and continues to provide care and welfare provision for seafarers and their dependents to this day.
