Management Trainees

We have a successful Management Trainee programme that offers talented internal and external candidates the opportunity to progress to a more senior level within the business.

We take great pride in the fact that three members of our Board of Directors are former Management Trainees. Nine of our Branch Managers attended the Management Trainee programme, some of whom also started their career with Bagnalls as apprentice painters. Since 2012, 86% of the trainees who completed the programme have chosen to remain with Bagnalls. Three of these former trainees are now Branch Managers.

The Management Trainee programme typically lasts for 2 years.

Trainees learn about all aspects of managing painting and decorating contracts, including:

  • safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ)
  • measuring, surveying and estimating
  • technical painting and decorating
  • contracts management
  • company procedures and administration

We also teach any specialist skills necessary to carry out their particular role.

Trainees receive a mentor from their branch throughout their training. Typically, the mentor will have been through the Management Trainee programme themselves.

This support is supplemented by surveying training via Bagnalls’ Technical Skills Coach and time at Bagnalls’ in-house Training Academy. Every six months, trainees undertake a skills and knowledge assessment through our bespoke Management Trainee app. Trainees are given objectives to work on during the six-month period, as well as individualised feedback on their strengths and development areas.

All our trainees (except those with a relevant degree) undertake a level 4 apprenticeship as part of their Management Trainee programme. This is either a Construction Site Supervisor or Project Manager apprenticeship.

We also offer opportunities for further development following completion of the Management Trainee programme. Alongside promotion opportunities, we offer additional apprenticeships. This includes the Level 5 Operations/Departmental Manager apprenticeship run through our training partner, Discovery.
