Avanti West Coast Rail Station Painting Programme

Bagnalls met all the project requirements to deliver the demanding painting programme across Avanti’s West Coast station painting programme. The programme of works covered 22 stations and was centrally coordinated by an experienced Operations Manager.

Key health and safety challenges included working in busy platform environments where passengers and rail staff were still getting on with their daily commutes and work, as well as live train movements.

Our site teams had to make sure that the public were always kept safe and that all risks were controlled when manoeuvring plant, access equipment, and materials around the stations. High level working was accessed using GRP equipment, including mobile towers and ladders, which were always carried in a controlled safe manner.

Managing safety, quality and customer service when working across multiple sites is not easy, therefore the Bagnalls management team made sure that the correct specification, work package plans and project information was communicated to all parties prior to the commencement of any painting works.

Pre-construction information was offered from the start of each and every station project to all parties including the Avanti consultant, Avanti project management team, the Avanti station managers and team leaders and more importantly to the Bagnalls site-based operatives and supervision.

All painting works were undertaken to a bespoke Dulux Trade paint specification, with colour schemes being developed for all the listed stations along the West Coast. The skill and experience of the Bagnalls trained painters was particularly evident when intricate picking out of heritage colours was required on stations at Preston, Crewe, Carlisle and Coventry. Working on several listed buildings within these heritage stations meant adhering to the conservation officers’ requirements for listed buildings status.

Bagnalls successfully delivered the painting programme which stretched from Edinburgh to Rugby, to the accolades of both Avanti West Coast staff and customers.
