Bagnalls Delivers Rail Refresh in Wales

Bagnalls is very pleased to count Transport for Wales among our valued customers. Our National Painting Division recently coordinated and delivered a multi-station painting programme for the rail company to the high standard synonymous with our brand.
This was just one of the reasons why Transport for Wales approached us with an urgent challenge to undertake a full refresh of Colwyn Bay Station, ensuring it matched the new branding.
The site was not previously included in our main programme of work and therefore needed to be completed to a tight deadline, with no extension available. Our experienced Ellesmere Port team stepped up to deliver a high-quality transformation within the existing timeframe.
The project focused on revitalising various areas of the station, including:
- Platforms One and Two
- The station frontage
- Key areas around the car park
- The loading bay.
Much of the previous paint and coatings were worn and flaking. The Bagnalls team successfully refreshed all surfaces, using the modern red-and-green Transport for Wales colour palette. The improvement was immediate and visually striking.
Thorough preparation across all steel and woodwork ensured a durable finish for the station. Steel surfaces were prepped by hand, then primed with Zinc Phosphate and completed with fast-drying Tikkurila ML-90 – ideal for maintaining a fantastic finish in a busy public environment.
All woodwork areas received the same level of care, finished with Dulux Trade Weathershield to ensure long-lasting protection. With minimal access to equipment required, the team was able to work efficiently and disruption to Transport for Wales staff and travellers was kept to a minimum.
We did face some challenges during the project due to weather conditions (plenty of bracing rain in Wales!) and late colour change decisions. But our team adapted quickly, making progress with sheltered areas during wet spells and continuing work as soon as colour specifications were confirmed.
Our flexible Bagnalls approach ensured the project stayed firmly on track, despite these momentary issues.
Despite the accelerated schedule, the full refresh was completed within the agreed programme window. Transport for Wales was delighted with both the finish and the delivery.
The success of this particular project has strengthened our relationship with Transport for Wales, opening the door to further opportunities across the network.
