Bagnalls Remembers: Sensory Room Creation
24 November 2025
The Bagnalls team loves looking back at our incredible partnership projects. One that always stands out is our collaboration with Dulux to create two multi-sensory classrooms at Firwood High School in Bolton.
These classrooms were designed by Dulux to ensure a positive learning environment for pupils with extra physical and mental needs. This was a lovely project to be involved with, allowing us to work with our long-term partner, Dulux Trade, to create environments that instilled feelings of peace and calm.
A specific Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) school for children aged 11-19, Firwood High School provides young people living with varying mental and physical needs with the supportive, welcoming space they need to learn and develop.
Firwood’s Head of School was delighted by the work undertaken and explained that, for multi-sensory classrooms to work effectively, it’s important to create a calming and relaxing space. The classroom must also eliminate distraction and remain easily adaptable to suit the needs of every pupil.
Dulux Trade’s experienced Colour Consultants designed the colour palettes for the Key Stage 3 and the Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) multi-sensory classrooms, using softer tones that instil feelings of calm and relaxation.
They carefully selected tones, including greys, pinks, deep blues and greens, that created a neutral backdrop for a wide range of learn and play activities. These specific colours allowed the Firwood pupils to learn and grow in a calming, relaxing environment.
Our team painted the classrooms using this bespoke colour palette, helping to create a finished space that was at once engaging and peaceful. The colours chosen helped to bring focus to specific areas of the room, without causing feelings of stress.
As well as the focus on colour, sustainability was also an important focus for the paint used within this project. Scuffshield paint products were applied for their durability and easy-to-clean properties. With this paint, the quality finish will last over time, reducing the need for re-application.
The low VOC levels associated with this paint also reduce its impact on the environment and ensure the health and safety of Firwood’s students. Plus, thanks to its water-based formula, the paint dried in just 4-6 hours.
This timescale enabled us to adhere to tight deadlines and deliver the project in time for the beginning of term.
