Bagnalls Repaints Historic Locke Park Bandstand

Bagnalls was pleased to be given the opportunity to restore the historic Locke Park bandstand, following a successful tender.
Commissioned by Barnsley Council, this project was in preparation for the reopening of the bandstand to the public, with a more contemporary colour scheme selected to enhance the park setting.
Originally constructed in 1897, Locke Park bandstand had accumulated numerous layers of paint over the years. Following discussions with Barnsley Council, we reached the conclusion that all existing coatings required removal.
It was agreed that the bandstand would be repainted using a two-pack epoxy system, offering improved durability and a longer life span than traditional paint systems.
Our skilled Bagnalls team used abrasive blasting techniques to carefully strip the steelwork of its old paint, working around the newly installed handrails and preserving the original timber ceiling.
We took great care to protect the integrity and detail of the original steelwork throughout. Safe access to work at height was provided by a specialist scaffolding system, allowing for thorough preparation before our skilled operatives repainted the ornate leaves, flowers and decorative features of the bandstand.
Once we had completed the blasting portion of the project, we cleaned and primed the steelwork, before turning our attention to the restoration of the timber ceiling.
The team then returned to the steelwork, applying the final coatings with precision to complement and highlight all restored features.
The final result is a beautifully restored bandstand that truly enhances the character of Locke Park. The Park Manager was delighted with the transformation, noting how the refreshed paintwork has brought the ornate mouldings back to life.
Now that it has officially reopened, the bandstand has received positive feedback from the general public and is once again a welcoming space for the community to enjoy.
