Meet Jane Potter: Branch Manager

16 May 2024

After 33 years of brilliant service with Bagnalls, Jane is now the valued Branch Manager for our Leeds and York branches.

What first attracted you to Bagnalls?

Jane: The chance to complete an apprenticeship scheme at a family-run business stood out to me, as it seemed I would be given the opportunity to progress in my career. The high standard of health and safety provision at the company was also a big selling point for me.

What did you do before you worked for Bagnalls?

Jane: I worked as an apprentice for a small company.

What is your favourite part of your job?

Jane: I love the flexibility available, as well as the opportunity to share ideas and feel valued within a brilliant team. It’s also great to see the company invest in the future of its people, from apprentices through to directors, with mentoring to achieve goals and progression available.

The wide variety of work, tasks and responsibilities keeps my job interesting and I always feel respected by my colleagues. I feel that I am working with skilled individuals who I can learn from and that I will be supported to take on new and challenging opportunities.

What is your biggest achievement at Bagnalls?

Jane: I have been given the opportunity to progress through the company to management level and build the business.

I was also able to continue with my interests outside of work during my time with Bagnalls, even managing to compete at the WorldSkills UK Olympics and return with a medal!

Do you have any advice for those considering a career in the painting and decorating industry?

Jane: Go for it! I started as an apprentice and have enjoyed great progression through the ranks. An apprenticeship provides you with a fantastic grounding of knowledge and the ability to achieve a qualification while earning. It’s a great way to gain skills for life and kickstart your career, working alongside highly-trained people who will guide you every step of the way.

How do you feel about your apprenticeship?

Jane: My apprentice has opened multiple doors for me and helped me progress my career. I’ve gained experience working with various tools, learning about graining and marbling techniques, wallpapering and painting. I’ve also had the chance to work on various properties, including hospitals, stately homes and factories.

I took advantage of various training courses to grow my talent. Once I began working in the office, I got to learn a brand-new set of tools regarding pricing and project management. I’m now used to dealing with customers and experienced in people management.
