Meet Ben Featherstone: Sustainability Coordinator
12 August 2024
Ben is our Sustainability Coordinator, helping Bagnalls be as green as we can be to protect our planet.
What first attracted you to Bagnalls?
Ben: I was impressed by the rich heritage and history of Bagnalls. When I met members of the team, Bagnalls’ values as a family business are immediately clear – this confirmed that I had made the right choice to work for Bagnalls.
I was also impressed by what Bagnalls was already doing regarding environmental and social management and I was attracted by the prospect of becoming the first person to fulfil this role within the company.
What did you do before you worked for Bagnalls?
Ben: I worked for Rethink Food in Leeds, supporting the team with the redistribution of waste and surplus food to community groups and individuals.
What is your favourite part of your job?
Ben: I really like the variety of work that I am able to get involved in. Every day at work is different, from developing our sustainability strategy and delivering training to colleagues, to coordinating our social value programme and overseeing our sustainability accreditations.
I am really pleased to have joined Bagnalls at the beginning of our sustainability journey and I look forward to working towards meeting our ambitious targets going forward.
One of the best things about working for Bagnalls is the support I have received from my manager, colleagues and the company as a whole towards my own personal development. One of our core values at Bagnalls is People and this has been clearly visible to me since my very first day.
What’s your biggest achievement at Bagnalls?
Ben: Thanks to the support of Bagnalls, I have been able to successfully complete my IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management qualification, providing me with the skills I need to drive change when it comes to environmental awareness and sustainability.
Do you have any advice for those considering a career in the painting and decorating industry?
Ben: I was surprised by the wide range of roles required in order for a painting and decorating business to operate smoothly, so I would definitely encourage people to look at the different options available and not rule anything out. Regardless of your initial pathway into the industry, there are lots of opportunities to move into different roles and explore different capabilities if you wish.
