The Queen Mother’s Sports Centre

14 January 2019

Bagnalls were awarded the contract to redecorate the pool hall and replace the stretched polymer membrane suspended ceiling, whilst the leisure centre remained open to the public.

Due to the height and expanse of the building interior, the cantilever scaffold design extended over one side of the pool, in two phases without touching the water, to the full height of the ceiling. The design of which was verified for its load bearing capability by a Structural Engineer at Westminster Council (the client). The scaffold was built over the 2017 Christmas holiday period in readiness for a prompt project start on the 8th January 2018 and scheduled for practical completion eight weeks later.

Our directly employed painting operatives worked at night and a specialist contractor replaced the stretched membrane during day light hours. Each elevation was hand washed in preparation of the subsequent substrate repairs. Phase One was concluded when the Sports Centre hosted a Swimming Gala half way through the project and the entire scaffold system was dismantled in time for one-day event. The scaffold was re-erected for Phase Two on the other side of the sports hall the very next day.

Extra controls for safe working were implemented while the public were using the facilities and the daily operation of the sports centre was unaffected by the works.

A Dulux specification was used throughout using Diamond Eggshell on each elevation and Metal Shield on the hand rails and balustrade.
