Welcome to The Team: Garry, Training Academy Tutor
30 October 2026
Our new Tutor, Garry, has been settling into life at our Doncaster Training Academy, where he’s helping to develop the next generation of painting and decorating professionals.
Working closely with our apprentices, Garry will support them in building the practical skills and confidence to progress throughout their apprenticeship.
Group Marketing Manager, Hermione, recently caught up with Garry to find out more about his journey into teaching, his experience so far and the role he plays in supporting apprentice development.
Hermione: How did you get into teaching?
Garry: “I started out as an apprentice painter and decorator way back in April 1983. Over the years, I’ve also run two businesses in between my teaching stints. I first got into teaching when I spotted an advert for a part-time lecturer position at the very place where I did my training, and I was absolutely thrilled to get the opportunity at the tender age of 24. Altogether, I’ve spent around 25 years in teaching.”
Hermione: What are you most looking forward to about your new role?
Garry: “The thing I am most looking forward to as a tutor is working with the students in a calmer and more relaxed atmosphere.”
Hermione: Are you excited about the brand-new Training Academy opening soon?
Garry: “I am absolutely excited and thrilled to be moving to the new Training Academy, especially since I’ve had some input into its development and truly believe the facilities will be world class.”
Hermione: What do you love most about coaching painting and decorating students?
Garry: “That ‘lightbulb moment’. When something finally clicks for a student and they appreciate the time I’ve put in to help them get there – that’s my favourite moment.”
Hermione: What’s been the proudest moment of your teaching career so far?
Garry: “Seeing my apprentices win competitions and knowing I’ve been a part of that journey. It’s a very humbling process and one that makes me extremely proud.”
