A New Look for Ysgol Aberconwy Bridge

Sodexo, one of the UK’s leading facilities management providers, appointed Bagnalls to complete a full repaint of the Ysgol Aberconwy (Aberconwy School) footbridge in Conwy, North Wales.

Our North West branch undertook the work, combining local expertise with nationally consistent standards of quality, safety and project management.
Acting as Principal Contractor under the Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations, Bagnalls managed all aspects of the project, including obtaining permits from local authorities, stakeholder coordination, site management and programme delivery.
Delivering specialist painting in a live school environment
One of the project’s biggest challenges was carrying out the refurbishment while the footbridge remained in daily use by pupils and staff. As a specialist painting and decorating contractor, Bagnalls developed a carefully planned programme that prioritised safety.
A fully designed fixed scaffolding system was installed around the structure, providing secure working platforms for our operatives, while maintaining safe pedestrian access.
A dedicated Bagnalls Supervisor was present on site throughout the project, overseeing operations and maintaining the high standards that Bagnalls is known for.
A durable finish starts with thorough surface preparation
Before any coatings were applied, our team removed loose and flaking paint before jet washing the footbridge at 3,000psi to achieve an ST3 standard.
Areas affected by corrosion were carefully prepared by hand, with all exposed metal surfaces spot-primed to provide a sound substrate for the new coating system. Once complete, our operatives applied a three-coat Tikkurila system, providing long-term protection against weathering, while significantly enhancing the appearance of the structure.
The project was delivered with minimal disruption to the school’s operations and completed within the customer’s eight-week timeline.
