A Quality Bagnalls Refresh for Blyth Battery
31 October 2024
Bagnalls was able to complete a recent refresh project for Blyth Battery, thanks to our existing client Northumberland County Council.
Blyth Battery is a collection of Grade II-listed concrete structures that gained Scheduled Monument status in 2006. The majority of the buildings were originally built back in 1916 and they remain an exceptional example of a complete First World War coastal defence battery.
This collection of buildings is the most intact, accessible and intelligible defence battery along the North East and Yorkshire coast. The structures now form part of a museum and visitors can take an informative, volunteer-led tour through the buildings to learn more about the battery’s historical significance.
The Bagnalls team was asked to lightly jet wash accumulated salt from the exterior of the buildings, along with the remainder of previous coatings. Our team prepared the surface of the structures thoroughly, using high-pressure water jet washing and non-damaging tools.
Our painters then applied a single layer of primer, followed by two new coats of protective paint. The specifications used were Dulux Weathershield Maximum Exposure Masonry and Dulux Metalshield Quick Dry. We selected these specifications as they performed successfully across a number of previous comparable projects.
Our completed work ensures that the structures are protected against the elements, while retaining a pleasing fresh and clean aesthetic for museum visitors. All works were carried out over three weeks.
We’re pleased to have been able to provide this service for Northumberland County Council, continuing our positive working relationship.
The Blyth Battery Museum commented: “We want to go on record to say how absolutely thrilled we are with the paint job provided. The team was fantastic and everyone worked so hard – we would definitely recommend Bagnalls to anyone!”
