In an article titled ‘The Key to Productivity’ in our leading industry magazine, The Decorator, our HR director, Ellie Jobes shared some fantastic thoughts as she spoke about Bagnalls’ Employee Assistance Programme.
The programme, which aims to help our employees who need support, was launched back in 2015, and is, as Ellie states in her interview, ‘a free, confidential helpline, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to all our employees.’
She speaks compassionately about how mental illness is a serious problem, especially for men working in the finishing trades, who are more than double the risk of suicide compared to the male national average.
The scheme encourages employees to speak up about mental health, a topic which is often extremely hard to discuss for men due to gender stereotypes which paint men as ‘emotionless’ and ‘tough’.
The scheme also, as Ellie suggests, increases the productivity of our workers and our business, because employees are spending less time worrying about personal problems and so more time working!
Here at Bagnalls, we understand that mental health is a serious issue and we’re fighting to reduce the stigma around it because it is okay to talk!
