Our rising stars have proven their worth once more by achieving Silver and Bronze at the Final of this year’s ‘Apprentice Decorator of the Year 2019’, held at Skillbuild in Birmingham NEC, last week. Lewis Boyle, 19, took home the Silver medal and Abi Johnson, 21, received the Bronze award. Both work for the Bagnalls’ office in Bradford and trained at the nearby Leeds College of Building, whose staff have shown immense support throughout their apprenticeships. Lewis and Abi were also winners at the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) awards earlier in the year when they were placed Winner and Runner-up respectively.
Ten young decorators were chosen to represent the trade following rigorous regional heats held across the UK. They put their painting and decorating skills to the test by demonstrating skills in glossing, wallpapering and producing an iconic design, which celebrated Crown Paints 40th year as the Apprentice Decorator of the Year (ADY) sponsor. The judges looked for a range of competencies including time management, precision to deliver the set piece, and achieving all three key tasks in the timescale of 18 hours.
Naomi Colecchia, HR Manager added “We are so proud of both Abi and Lewis. Seeing them work under the strict competition conditions, with all the noise and activity of thousands of visitors to the NEC Worldskills UK exhibition, was truly amazing. It was evident that they were both dedicated to the task in hand and managed their time well. We are over the moon with their achievements. They have both proven their painting and decorating capabilities throughout the year and their brilliant success at Skillbuild is a fitting end to a momentous year.”
