Bagnalls Awards: 78th in the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers
22 December 2022
Apprenticeships are an integral part of Bagnalls. We have employed apprentices since 1899 and still offer worthwhile training and development opportunities to this day – which is why we’re extremely proud to be in the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers in the UK!
We have a wealth of apprenticeship success stories within our business. Right now, we employ 29 managers that began their careers as apprentices. In addition, Lee Jeyes and Richard Britten from our Board of Directors got their start as apprentice painters at Bagnalls. Even Alfred Bagnall, the founder of our company, began his career as an apprentice painting railway carriage at the Saltley Railway Carriage and Wagon Company.
Bagnalls continues to welcome apprentices with open arms. In 2021 and 2022, we employed 24 apprentices in Painting & Decorating, Accountancy and Site Management. When the Department of Education recognised us with the award in March 2022, 7.4% of our business was made up of apprentices. And, through continuous mentorship at Bagnalls Academy, our people will go on to become experts within their field.
To be recognised as a top apprenticeship employer, businesses must employ 250 people and at least 25 of these should be apprentices. There were over 500 entries this year, and we were competing with multiple prestigious organisations, from BT to the British Army and Network Rail. So, we’re over the moon to be named 78th in the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers. It’s a true testament to the drive and passion of our amazing team!
Ellie Jobes, our HR Director commented: “I am delighted that Bagnalls has been awarded a place in the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers for 2022, especially as there were so many entrants for a place. I believe our success is down to our commitment to apprenticeships at senior management level, the continued support for our apprenticeship programmes by branch colleagues at both management and site levels, as well as the support given by local colleges who provide additional skills training for all our apprentices.
“Traditionally, our apprentices have been trained in painting and decorating, gaining skills on customer sites, at college and the company’s bespoke Training Academy in Doncaster. However, in recent years we have embraced the variety of apprenticeships available for all staff to uphold our value of people development.”
