Meet Matty Race: Management Trainee

Matty is one of our talented Management Trainees. He is currently undertaking his Apprenticeship Level 4 Associate Project Manager course, which he will complete later this year. We caught up with him about his career journey with Bagnalls so far.

What first attracted you to the Bagnalls Management Trainee scheme?

Matty: I enjoyed playing rugby semi-professionally, but I knew it wasn’t going to be a long-term career for me. After gaining some experience working with my dad, I wanted to see what other job opportunities were out there.

I was interested in pursuing a career in Construction, and the Bagnalls Management Trainee scheme was an ideal opportunity to earn and learn at the same time!

How do you want to develop in the future?

Matty: After completing my Apprenticeship Level 4 Associate Project Manager course, I hope to manage more projects and broaden my career horizons.

In terms of my management training progress so far, I have already gained lots of experience, making the most of opportunities to go on site visits and attend Management Trainee conferences. I really enjoyed meeting all of the other Management Trainees from across the group.

It’s important to develop strong relationships now, as we work together to manage more and more projects over the coming years.

Can you tell us about a recent project you’ve been involved in? What was your favourite part of this opportunity?

Matty: I really enjoyed supporting the delivery of the Transport for Wales project across a wide geographical area! I was responsible for setting everything up, managing logistics and ensuring successful delivery, with the support of three Bagnalls branches.

The project involved painting works across 25 stations in Wales, all with varying levels of redecoration required. Coordinating project requirements across three branches to offer the unique skills of the Special Projects team meant that I felt really connected with both the project and local contract managers.
