Severn Trent Water
13 September 2016
Bagnalls Building Maintenance has been working with Severn Trent Water for several years, providing reactive and planned building maintenance and minor civils work to over 3000 sites. During this time we have also been tasked with carrying out larger scale programmes of work, including upgrading various pipe bridges across the Derbyshire region.
The Stevenson pipe bridge was in urgent need of refurbishment and had become inaccessible due to the growth of vegetation and inadequate maintenance. To bring the pipe bridge back to a useable state, many challenges had to be overcome, including protecting the water course to ensure no contamination reached the water source during our work activities. We also had to ensure that we coordinated with other contractors and suppliers to enable us to meet the specific timescales set by Severn Trent Water.
To begin with we had to fell trees encroaching or causing a threat to the bridge and pipework installation. We then removed all undergrowth, brambles and scrub from the front and sides of the bridge and the entrance to subway. Once we had clear access to the bridge we could then fix the new access deterrent measures, security barriers, gate and fencing to the entrance of the bridge. We then refurbished the existing security barriers, gate and fencing to the entrance of the subway tunnel and rebuilt the new concrete and hard-core flight of steps, fixing a handrail on one side. This was followed by the construction of a new valve access platform, with non-slip flooring, hand railing and edge barriers. And finally, we fixed a new GRP kicker along the top of the tunnel entrance to retain any loose debris.
All works were completed to budget and in the three-week timescale requested by the customer.
