The Cube
21 June 2018
Having worked with artist Sinta Tantra on two previous schemes, at Bristol Royal Hospital and the DLR rail bridge at Canary Wharf, Bagnalls were given the opportunity to competitively tender the newly designed geometric paint work for The Cube. The Cube is an adult education centre in Folkestone’s Creative Quarter, an area of Folkestone where people’s creativity is encouraged, supported and enabled to flourish. The works were secured via competitive tender.
This unique project was commissioned by the Creative Foundation as one of twenty artworks for the Folkestone Triennial 2017. Works by internationally recognised artists can be seen in Folkestone’s public spaces under the title, ‘Double Edge’ with some works due to remain in the town to add to its expanding art collection, Folkestone Artworks.
Sinta Tantra’s dynamic painted design is titled ‘1947’ and was inspired by a vintage poster from that year that promoted rail travel to Folkestone as a holiday and tourism destination during the post war years. The design utilises colours such as candy pink, racing green and Wedgewood blue in a series of circles with flowing and broken lines inspired by artist Sonia Delaunay. The curved and straight edges required to depict the pattern were created using a variety of different tools & materials. The precise cutting in of colours against one another was carried out by the skilled hands of Bagnalls’ Site Management & Painting Tradesmen.
The end result speaks for itself, with a building that stands as a proud, artistic beacon at the top of Tontine Street. The client was extremely happy with the finished commission which was completed on budget ahead of schedule. A testimonial from the Creative Foundation, Folkestone Triennial 2017 stated, “From the outset, Bagnalls proved to be reliable, helpful and communicative. Their prices were competitive and their staff were always professional, friendly, patient and were all good listeners. The work was completed to a high standard, ahead of schedule and on budget. One of, if not the best contractors we have worked with in ten years.”
