Using Football to Support Mental Health

27 March 2023

Football at grassroots level can make a real difference to local communities and charities. We’re passionate about supporting worthwhile local causes, and one that is especially close to our heart comes from the amazing work of one of our very own apprentices!

Reggie, a Bagnalls apprentice painter based in Leeds, is proving how football can be a force for good with Mate (Men and Their Emotions) United FC, a charity football team that promotes mental health.

Reggie owns and manages Mate United FC with his friend, Hayden, who also set up Vulnerable Citizens Support in Leeds – a charity that supports homeless people with food and resources.

They’re both true believers in providing , and they’re doing this by supporting the homeless and helping people find a mate to talk to about their mental health issues.

Mate United FC is not affiliated to any league, but its sister club, is affiliated to the Leeds Combination League. VCS United has three teams: first team, reserves and a women’s side. Mate United FC, meanwhile, has a number of fixtures planned to raise money for various .

In addition to the team’s official players, several celebrity guest players will feature in its upcoming matches, including British bare-knuckle boxer Scott McHugh, Britain’s Got Talent finalist Micky P Kerr, and ex-Leeds United, Southampton and Blackpool striker Brett Ormerod.

If you’d like to show Mate United your support, the team will be playing on 21st May 2023 at the Neil Hudgell Law Stadium in Bridlington. The team will be raising money for Humber Rescue and the Teenage Cancer Trust, so all proceeds will be donated to these two important charities. Professional boxer Koby McNamara, Rate My Takeaway and LDC radio star Danny Malin and professional British bare-knuckle boxing champion Scott McHugh are all billed to take part in this fixture!

Bagnalls is incredibly proud to sponsor this team and worthwhile cause, and we’re so proud to see our apprentice Reggie use his passion to support mental health. Football really does have the power to make change for good!
